Shillong: Meghalaya has 21,61,129 electors, including 10,92,326 women’s voters and two transgenders voters, an increase of 18 per cent, with 4,29,062 new electors being added from 2018, an election official said on Thursday.

Elections to the 60-member House Meghalaya Assembly are expected to be held in February this year.

Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Roy Kharkongor said there is a net increase of 2.36 per cent in the current electorate over the draft rolls as on November 9, 2022, with women enrolment at 10,92,326 higher than male enrolment. Moreover, there are 3844 service electors too.

He also informed that 13,848 electors were removed from the electoral rolls on account of reasons such as death, or shifting of address while 40,700 electors’ particulars were also corrected in the revision.

The electoral rolls for the Special Summary Revision (SSR), 2023 will be published on Thursday. The SSR-2023 commenced on November 9 with the state-level launch of the draft publication of electoral rolls.

“Altogether 63,763 new electors had applied for enrollment through Form 6 during the just-concluded SSR exercise. However, the net addition post-hearing of claims and objections was 49,915,” the CEO said.

Kharkongor said the whole SSR process has been guided by the principles of ensuring purity, health, inclusiveness, integrity and transparency in the entire exercise.

“Periodic meetings were held at both the CEO level and at the level of DCs with all political parties to ensure transparency in the overall SSR process. Inclusiveness was given a special focus, and as an outcome the number of electors with Disabilities (PwDs) stands at 7,478,” he said.

Kharkongor said Currently the EP Ratio stands at 64.53 per cent, Gender Ratio is 1022, and enrolment of 18-19 age groups is currently at 81,443.

“In comparison to 3083 polling stations in 2018, the total number of polling stations has increased to 3482 polling stations,” he said.
