2 Indians held with 109 live animals

Bangkok: Two Indian women were arrested at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport while trying to smuggle 109 live animals including porcupines, lizards, and snakes, CNN reported on Tuesday.

Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation was quoted as saying on Monday that the wild animals were discovered in two suitcases following an x-ray inspection.

Wildlife officials discovered two white porcupines, two armadillos, 35 turtles, 50 lizards, and 20 snakes in the luggage.

Thai authorities said the suitcases belonged to Indian women Nithya Raja, 38, and Zakia Sulthana Ebrahim, 24, who were due to board a flight to Chennai, CNN reported.

They have been charged with violating various Thai legislation.
