Agartala: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday inspected the single-row wire fencing along the India-Bangladesh border in Sabroom of Tripura.
Accompanied by Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Shah visited one of the oldest border outposts at Kathalcherri of South Tripura and inspected the three-kilometre stretch between Ailiyamara and Anandapara where work on single row fencing has been going on after almost a decade with the agreement of both India and Bangladesh.
The wire fencing work was suspended for last many years following an objection from Bangladesh Border Guards (BBG) who alleged that Inia was not complying with the clause to put up the fencing 100 yards inside the border.
There was a gun battle at Mandirghat BOP of Sabroom about eight years ago between BSF and BBG over the fencing dispute. Shah also visited Sabroom border outpost and Maitree setu (bridge) built by India connecting Sabroom with Ramgarh of Southern Bangladesh over River Feni for getting access to Chittagong seaport within a distance of 70 kilometres.
Besides Sabroom, work on installing single row fencing has been going on in several locations of Tripura, including a 6.5 km unfenced critical stretch of the Indo-Bangladesh border at Sonamura.
