Shillong: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has shortlisted three names for the Meghalaya Director-General of Police (DGP) post and forwarded the list to the State government for the appointment, an official said on Friday.

The names are: Mukesh Agrawal, K.V.Singh Deo (both 1989 batch IPS officer) and L. Ram Bishnoi (1991 batch). The three officers are serving with the Assam government as the officers are from the Assam-Meghalaya IPS cadre, an official told UNI on condition of anonymity.

By shortlisting only three names from out of the eligible list of candidates the Meghalaya government had forwarded to it, the UPSC has diligently stuck to the Supreme Court’s order in the Prakash Singh case. Now, it is up to the Meghalaya government to choose its candidate from these three names.

The Meghalaya government had forwarded the names of five IPS officers of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre for appointment as the next DGP after R Chandranathan retired on December 31, 2021. Apart from Agarwal, Deo and Bishnoi, the other two names are: S. Narayan Singh (1991 batch) and Idashisha Nongrang (1992 batch).

Nongrang, who is promoted as Special DGP by the Meghalaya government is currently the officiating DG in the State. Barring Nongrang, none of the other police officers has served in Meghalaya. The majority of the people, including political parties had reportedly wanted Nongrang to be the first woman DGP of Meghalaya.
