Duliajan (Assam): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said in an era of dwindling insurgency, the state police need to redefine their role to become people-centric while simultaneously dealing firmly with the miscreants.
Talking at the inaugural function of the second conference of Suprtiendents of police, Sarma stressed police personnel in the state should raise the level of policing through the use of technology and hi-tech surveillance.
“I would be happy if I can roam around without (rpt without) a battery of police personnel always guarding me…..the use of increased police presence signifies the police have failed to neutralise threat perception,” Sarma said adding that the state police force has to raise the bar of investigation to take criminal cases to its logical conclusion.
He also stressed that the police force should use more technology to make security invisible.
“My expectations are high…..police force in Assam should become first in India in tech policing,” he said.
Continuing his tirade against the drug mafia and organised crime syndicate, Sarma said police cannot be friendly with criminals. They have to maintain zero-tolerance towards criminals.
“You should deal firmly with anyone who is involved in organised crime which destroys the economy, the youths of the state,” he added.
Sarma said since BJP assumed power in the state for its second term, Assam police have shown exemplary courage in dealing with drug mafia and organised crime syndicates.
In the two-day SP conference, Sarma will review the functioning of police of 34 districts of the state. SPs of each district will give a 15-minute presentation to Sarma
The conference will also deliberate on internal security, security situation, international borders. Besides SPs, top army officials are also attending the deliberations.
