Arakkal Royal Family head Adhiraja Mariyumma passes away

Mariyumma alias Cheriya Bikkunhu Beevi became the 40th ruler of the Arakkal dynasty and assumed the charge on May 8, 2019.

Kannur: Adhiraja Mariyumma, the head of the Arakkal Royal family, passed away at her residence Almar Mahal near here due to old-age ailments on Monday.

She was 87. She is the wife of late AP Aluppi Elaya, a retired Madras port officer.

She is survived by three children.

Mariyumma alias Cheriya Bikkunhu Beevi became the 40th ruler of the Arakkal dynasty and assumed the charge on May 8, 2019.

Arakkal dynasty was the lone Muslim dynasty in Kerala that had once ruled the Kannur town and the southern part of Lakshadweep and Minicoy.

The female head of the Arakkal family is also known as ‘Arakkal Beevi’.

The State government had been providing an annual pension called ‘Malikhan’ to the head of the dynasty who is also the patron of several heritage institutions including the famed Arakkal Museum in Kannur.

The funeral will be held with full state honours at Kannur City Juma Masjid kabarsthan in the evening.
