Shillong: Two metric tonnes of Meghalaya’s golden spice Lakadong turmeric, has been exported to Russia as part of a trial-post demand for the spice among consumers in the destination country.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said Chi Iung Spices Cooperative Society, Mowtyrshiah, with the assistance of 1917i Teams, exported two tonnes of Lakadong turmeric to Russia via Jaipur as part of a trial-post demand for the spice among consumers in the destination country.
Meghalaya has already shipped Lakadong Tumeric and ginger to The Netherlands and United Kingdom.
The famous turmeric earned the name, Lakadong from Lakadong village in Jaiñtia Hills of Meghalaya.
The farmers of Lakadong village and nearby villages have been cultivating and producing this well-known spice extensively.
Rich in Curcumin, Lakadong tumeric is known for its medicinal qualities and its compound known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and renders a bright yellow colour to the spice.
The Lakadong variety of turmeric originates from the Lakadong area of West Jaintia Hills and it is considered as one of the best varieties of turmeric in the world with Curcumin content between seven to nine per cent.
Lakadong tumeric is one of the highest, as against two to three per cent in most varieties of turmeric.
