Oxygen plant installed at Shillong Civil Hospital

Shillong: An oxygen generation plant of 270 litres per minute (LPM) capacity will be ready for commissioning in the next 24 hours at Shillong Civil Hospital in East Khasi Hills, the worst-hit COVID-19 district in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Sunday.

Around 98 per cent of work, including installation has been completed and in the next 24 hours the plant will be commissioned which can support 25 beds with high flow oxygen.

On Sunday afternoon, the Chief Minister inspected the ongoing installation at the hospital.

He also held a review meeting at the hospital and thanked the doctors, nurses, and staff of the hospital for their dedicated and concerted service for the citizens of the State.

“Inspected the ongoing installation of the 270 LPM Oxygen Plant at Civil Hospital, Shillong. The Plant will be operational in the next 24 hours and can support a minimum of 25 beds with high flow oxygen,” Sangma said.

The Chief Minister informed that all efforts are being made by the government to ensure Management and control measures taken by the district administration amid the current COVID-19 scenario.

The oxygen stocks in the State are “manageable”, Sangma had earlier said.

Oxygen generators for Tura, Jowai and Nongpoh are on their way to the State and installations will be done immediately upon their arrival and they will be made functional by June, 2021, he had informed.

At present there are a total of about 4534 active cases in the State. The cases show an upward trend and the Government has imposed lockdown in East Khasi Hills and strict containment measures in other parts of the State.

Regarding treatment facilities, the Chief Minister said that across the Stare the Districts have dedicated COVID management system.

“Cluster or Community Quarantine Centres will be created in every District up to the community level depending on the requirement. All DCs have been communicated for necessary action. Centres will cater to positive cases that are asymptomatic and who do not need serious medical attention. This will be done to unburden our hospitals, healthcare facilities and our health machinery,” he said.

There are plans to set in motion the Community Isolation Centres near Community Health Centres and Primary Health Centres.
