76% voter turnout as Phase 2 of Lok Sabha polls ends in Manipur

Imphal: The second phase of polling for the 18th Lok Sabha election in Manipur ended by and large peacefully except for one or two minor incidents on Friday.

According to poll officials, Manipur recorded a 76.06 per cent voter turnout as the voting for thirteen Assembly segments of the 2-Outer Manipur (ST) Parliamentary constituency spreading across eight districts ended at 4 pm. 

On the other hand, at least one instance of unidentified men trying to snatch an EVM was reported at Greenland, Ukhrul district headquarters, said an election official. 

A total of 4.8 lakh voters including 2.9 lakh male and 2.4 lakh female and two transgender voters exercised their franchise in Phase 2.  There are 848 polling stations including 36 nos. of P-3 polling stations and 279 nos. of P-2 polling stations and 533 nos. of P-1 polling stations.

Friday’s polling is the last and final polling for this Lok Sabha election. 

The first phase of voting in the Inner Parliamentary constituency and a portion of the Outer Manipur seat including Churachandpur and Kangpokpi was held on 19 April.

However, as reported by this news portal earlier, the poll panel had to go for repolling as the state witnessed unprecedented violence across various districts.  

Four candidates are in the fray – NPF-BJP-NPP’s Kachui Timothy Zimi, Congress’ Alfred Kanngam Aruthur and Independents S Kho John and Alyson Abonmai.
