450 new COVID-19 cases, 9 deaths in Meghalaya

Shillong: Meghalaya recorded 450 new Coronavirus infections, the highest single-day surge in positive cases, pushing the number of active cases to 3,297, while the death toll mounted to 242 with nine more deaths in the past 24 hours, health officials said on Tuesday.

The positivity rate stands at 16.02 per cent, while the fatality is 1.176 per cent as on Tuesday, the official said.

Meanwhile, the recovery rate stands at 82.80 per cent, with 206 more patients recovered from the contagious infection, taking the number of rocoveries up to 17, 040 in Meghalaya as on Tuesday.

Meghalaya ranked 9th amongst all the state in India in terms of recovering rate, a health official said, adding that “recovery inching upwards.”

Director Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War said the nine COVID-19-related deaths recorded on Tuesday included six in the East Khasi Hills district, two in West Jaintia Hills district and one in Ri-Bhoi district.

Out of the 450 new cases, the senior medical official said 312 in East Khasi Hills district, 45 in West Garo Hills district, 27 in Ri-Bhoi district, 20 in East Jaintia Hills district, 18 in West Jaintia Hills Hills district, 15 in South West Garo Hills district six in West Khasi Hills district and five in East Garo Hills district.

The East Khasi Hills, which includes state capital Shillong is the worst COVID-19 affected district with 1,907 active cases and 203.

The State government has clamped lockdown till 5 a.m of May 17 in East Khasi Hills district to break the transmission chain.

Ri-Bhoi is the second most COVID-19 affected district with 458 active cases, followed by East Jaintia Hills district with 144 , West Garo Hills district with 280, West Khasi Hills district with 132, West Jaintia Hills district with 130, South West Garo Hills district with 96, South Garo Hills district with 55, East Garo Hills district with 44, North Garo Hills district with 36 and 15 in South West Khasi Hills district.

Dr. War said 729 COVID-19 patients are currently admitted in institutional quarantine centre while 2,568 others are in home quarantine and isolation across the State. Moreover, there were 111 containment zones across the State where COVID-19 positive cases were detected.

Of the new recoveries recorded on Tuesday, Dr. War informed that 148 patient’s recovered in East Khasi Hills district, 26 in Ri-Bhoi district, 12 in West Garo Hills district, 10 in East Jaintia Hills district, six in West Jaintia Hills district and two each in North Garo Hills ans South West Khasi Hills districts.

Meghalaya has so far registered 20, 579 confirmed COVID-19 cases, even as swab samples of the 4, 90, 677 persons tested for COVID-19 till date, 4, 70, 098 were tested negative for the virus, while 1, 17, 222 persons from outside entered the State since the onset of the pandemic as on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 27,242 healthcare workers received the first dose of Covishield and 19,181 received the second dose, 61,259 frontline workers got the first shot and 26,108 got the second jab of the vaccine against Covid-19, while 2,01,593 persons from among the general public were inoculated with the first dose and 25,708 persons were fully vaccinated with the second dose, Dr. War said.
