Tiruchirapalli: Four convicts in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, who were released from Central prisons on the Supreme Court order on Saturday evening were lodged in the Special Camp, housing foreign Nationals mostly Sri Lankans inside the Tiruchirapalli Central Prison.

Official sources said here on Sunday that Murugan, Santhan, Robert Payas and Jayakumar, all Sri Lankan Nationals were brought to Tiruchirapalli late on Saturday night amid tight security from the Central Prison at Vellore and Puzhal Central Prison at Chennai and lodged in the Special Camp.

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the release of all the six convicts, including Nalini and Ravichandran who were serving life term for about three decades in the case, noting that its earlier order releasing another convict A G Perarivalan was equally applicable to them.

Perarivalan was released in May this year.

While Murugan and Santhan were accommodated in one room, Robert Payas and his brother-in-law Jayakumar were lodged in another room inside the camp. They will not be allowed to venture out of the camp as per the rules applicable to other foreign inmates of the camp.

Over 100 police personnel including personnel from the Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion were deployed in and outside the camp for security reasons.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by an LTTE suicide bomber on May 21, 1991 at Sriperumbudur near Chennai.
