Srinagar: Two policemen were killed and a dozen others injured in a deadly attack in Srinagar outskirts on Monday evening, officials said.
Two of the injured succumbed to their injuries, police said in a tweet, adding that one of them was an Assistant Sub Inspector and another was a Selection Grade Constable.
A massive manhunt by the security agencies is underway to trace the attackers, who they believe are two.
The attack took place at Zewan area of Pantha Chowk when a police vehicle was passing through the area and militants opened fire.
“Terrorists fired upon a police vehicle near Zewan in Pantha Chowk area of Srinagar. 14 personnel injured in the attack. All the injured personnel evacuated to hospital. Area cordoned off. Further details shall follow: Jammu and Kashmir Police tweeted.
The attack at Zewan took place hours after two militants, including a suspected Pakistani affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba were involved in a brief shooting incident at Rangret on Srinagar outskirts.
Police said it was a chance encounter. Those killed in Rangret encounter have been identified as Aadil Ahmad Wani a resident of Daramdoora Shopian and another a foreigner.
“Adil is a Pakistan-trained “A” category terrorist while the other killed terrorist as per credible sources is a foreign terrorist, yet same is being further ascertained,” a police spokesman said.
