Hyderabad: In a significant announcement, the YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) declared its support for the Congress party in the coming Telangana Assembly election, slated for November 30, 2023.
During a presser, YSRTP President YS Sharmila explained the party’s rationale behind this decision.
She emphasised on the importance of joining forces to challenge the government, led by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, which she characterised as a regime with “authoritarian” tendencies.
YSRTP aims to avoid splitting votes to achieve this goal, she stated.
Sharmila acknowledged that the party must choose the right time to contest elections effectively and expressed regret to the people of the Palamuru Constituency for not fielding a candidate as initially planned.
She had previously intended to contest from Palamuru but decided not to, taking into account the candidacy of Congress nominee Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy.
Sharmila highlighted the Congress party’s electoral success in Karnataka as a positive sign for its prospects in Telangana.
She stated that she viewed Congress as a pivotal force for secularism in the country, emphasising on its position as the largest secular party.
