Women’s football match sets stage for 135th Durand Cup in Manipur

The event highlighted Manipur’s growing role in promoting women’s sports and football talent.

Imphal:   As a prelude to the 135th Durand Cup 2026, jointly organised by the Indian Armed Forces and the Government of Manipur, a Women’s Exhibition Football Match was held today at the SAI Ground, Takyel, to encourage and inspire women footballers in the state. The 135th edition of the prestigious tournament is to be held in Manipur from July 28 to August 12, 2026.

The exhibition match was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and Home, Government of Manipur, Shri Govindas Konthoujam, as the Chief Guest.

The inaugural function was attended by Major General Shubhankar Basu, General Officer Commanding, Red Shield Division; Major General Rajiv Nanda (Retd.), Defence Banking Advisor, SBI Foundation; Dr. Rohit Shrivastava, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), NEIDO; and other distinguished dignitaries.

Before the commencement of the match, four eminent women footballers from Manipur—Oinam Bembem Devi, Thongam Tababi Devi, Grace Dangmei, and Nirmala Devi—were felicitated in recognition of their outstanding contributions to Indian football. Nineteen students from the state who successfully qualified in the NEET and JEE examinations this year were also honoured by the Chief Guest and the dignitaries for their academic achievements.

Following the felicitation ceremony, the exhibition match was played between The Kangla Warriors and The Sangai Strikers. The match was held in a vibrant sporting atmosphere and witnessed enthusiastic support from spectators.
