Woman killed as unprecedented rain wreak havoc in Itanagar

The deceased has been identified as Rina Gwala, a resident of Kuruwa Basti under Gohpur Police Station in Assam’s Biswanath district.

Itanagar: A 38-year-old woman was killed at Lobi Kola camp near Itanagar on Monday after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall swept away her kutcha house.

In the incident, four other members of the family, including a minor, escaped with minor injuries, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Rina Gwala, a resident of Kuruwa Basti under Gohpur Police Station in Assam’s Biswanath district.

Flash floods caused by the unprecedented rain wreaked havoc in the twin capital cities of Itanagar and Naharlagun early this morning, leaving a trail of devastation.

In Naharlagun circle, around 30 houses were fully damaged and 60 others partially, while in Itanagar, seven houses were damaged fully and 14 partially. At Lobi, a suspension bridge was damaged, official sources said.

Itanagar Capital Complex district administration informed that about 5,000 populations were affected in the state capital. The affected areas are Donyi Polo Vidya Bhavan area and Lower Niti Vihar (Lobi area) under Itanagar circle, and Modirijo, Press Colony, Tani Putung, Sanglo Putung-III, River Colony (opposite Puroik Colony), Papu Nallah Dree Ground and Papu Nallah 2 Kilo – all under Naharlagun circle.

Several vehicles were also washed away in the flash floods, sources said.

Meanwhile, Disaster Management Secretary Dani Salu informed that immediate relief is being provided to the affected households and ex-gratia granted to the next of kin of the deceased lady.
