Washington: Two major US airlines have canceled flights ahead of Christmas due to fast-spreading Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the country.

United Air Lines (UAL) and Delta Air Lines (DAL) on Thursday canceled their Christmas eve flights.

The Hill quoted UAL as saying that “we’re seeing about 120 cancellations planned for Friday.”

UAL said in its memo: “The nationwide spike in Omicron cases this week has had a direct impact on our flight crews and the people who run our operation.

“As a result, we’ve unfortunately had to cancel some flights and are notifying impacted customers in advance of them coming to the airport. We’re sorry for the disruption and are working hard to rebook as many people as possible and get them on their way for the holidays.”

Later, DAL canceled its 93 flights due to multiple issues including the Omicron variant, CNN reports.
