Two militants killed in south Kashmir gunfight

The gunfight broke at Chowgam area of Shopian in the wee hours when joint forces were carrying a cordon and a search operation following an input regarding the presence of militants in the area.

Srinagar: Two unidentified militants were killed in a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday, officials said.

The gunfight broke at Chowgam area of Shopian in the wee hours when joint forces were carrying a cordon and a search operation following an input regarding the presence of militants in the area.

“An encounter started during the CASO and in the operations two terrorists have been killed,” a police officer said.

The identity and affiliation of the militants could not be established immediately. 

Police said incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the gunfight site.

This is the second gunfight in south Kashmir since Friday.

A local militant of Hizbul-Mujahideen was killed in a gunfight, which lasted barely for ten minutes, at Mominhall Aarwani area of Bijbehara in Anantnag district on Friday morning.
