Agartala:In a joint operation with police, BSF seized two gold bars worth Rs 1.32 Cr from a pickup van at Shekerkot market in the city and arrested the driver of the vehicle identified as Nazrul Islam, BSF said on Sunday.
According to BSF Tripura Frontier, the security force personnel intercepted the van on Saturday based on input regarding the smuggling of foreign-origin gold bars in the vehicle heading toward Agartala from Sonamura of bordering town under Sepahijala district.
Initial investigation revealed that the gold bars were smuggled from Bangladesh and were supposed to be delivered to a jewelry racket in Agartala. However, police are interrogating the accused but nothing revealed conclusive so far in the case, police claimed.
During the initial search, nothing was found in the vehicle but in the second round of checks a BSF vehicle mechanic recovered two gold bars clandestinely hidden in a cavity near the driver seat, a BSF release stated.
In the fight against the menace of trans-border smuggling in the state, BSF continuously conducts special operations to neutralise the ill designs of trans-border smuggling on the India-Bangladesh International border, as it is committed to thwarting the attempts being made by trans-border criminals, smugglers, the release added.
