Students demand NRC before Manipur census

Imphal: A delegation of students representing 10 schools and colleges met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh demanding the implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) before Census at Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Imphal today.

They demanded the Chief Minister to pressurise the Centre to order the implementation of NRC for the state of Manipur before the Census. The students also demanded the Chief Minister to detect the illegal immigrants through NRC before conducting the census. The delegation urged the Chief Minister to reopen the educational institutions.

They further demanded the discussion of the issue in the forthcoming State Assembly Session.

Yumnam Khemchand Singh assured the student delegation that the Government will move to discuss the implementation of NRC in Manipur in the ensuing State Assembly session beginning 2nd September. He also informed the students that the Government supports the implementation of NRC in the State. He added, that the conduct of NRC and error free implementation of NRC are two issues that need to be addressed. 

The meeting was attended by Commissioner of Education Ningthoujam Geoffrey and Director Education (S) Ng. Bhogendra Meitei.

The delegation of students comprises from DM College of Science, Manipur College, CC Higher Secondary School, Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Nambol Higher Secondary School, T.G. Higher Secondary School, Ibotonsana Girl’s Higher Secondary School, Ram Lal Paul School, Model Higher Secondary School and Ananda Singh Higher Secondary School.
