Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb announced to set up a football training institute in the state to provide world-class coaching to the budding footballers of the region after holding a meeting with the officials of the North East Football Association (NEFA) on Tuesday.
He said Tripura has a huge sports talent like other states of the Northeast but they were not nurtured properly in the previous dispensation.
After Dipa Karmakar represented India at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio-de-Janeiro and became the first Indian female gymnast ever to compete in Olympics, this sector in Tripura has got attention.
After BJP led government came to power in 2018, the Sports sector got a major facelift and Northeast Football Association has decided to hold a league and knock out football tournament of eight northeastern states in October this year, Deb said adding, “We have enough football talents in the villages of the state and sports department would launch a special drive to search out the talents and to bring them for international standard coaching in the upcoming institute.”
An eight-member delegation of NEFA arrived here on Tuesday and discussed organising the first-ever regional football tournament in the state with the Chief Minister and Sports and Youth affairs minister besides, Tripura Football Association.
