Agartala: A civil rights protection body, Tripura Human Rights Organization (THRO),  has decided to move the High Court seeking action against political violence and compensation to victims, which occurred soon after the declaration of election results to the Tripura assembly on March 2 last.

Talking to media, THRO Secretary and defeated left-Congress-backed independent candidate of Ramnagar constituency of the city Purushottam Roy Barman alleged that over a thousand of violence perpetrated on the opposition supporters in Ramnagar area alone in a week, and the figure is a few thousand across the state.

“The houses, shops, and other livelihood options including agricultural orchards were destroyed and set on fire accusing the families of voting against BJP. Police were not taking any action against anybody despite lodging specific complaints, rather the families were attacked for the second time and slapped with a hefty amount of money for reporting the atrocities to the police, which was not only a criminal act but also an open challenge to the elected government,” Roy Barman alleged.

The law-and-order situation in Tripura left out of control in the last seven days due to the failure of the police and the state administration, Roy Barman stated, adding, “We are surprised to see the elected MLAs of BJP are directly indulging to the violence and attacks on the opposition supporters and destroyed their houses and properties in front of police. The families remained homeless but had no support from the administration.”

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has promised after the announcement of the results, measures will be taken to ensure that no political violence happens. But ever since the election results were announced, there has been continuous violence across the state on the opposition left more than a hundred people hospitalized.

“When administration, police, and ECI failed to protect the citizens from the criminals just for voting non-BJP parties, and there is no statement from the ruling party or Chief Minister, we have only option left to move High Court seeking justice. If required, we shall go to the Supreme Court against such illegal and barbaric acts,” Roy Barman threatened.

He further alleged not only the supporters and workers, the defeated candidates, and their relatives in various parts of the state have also come under the attack of ruling party cadres.

The anti-social elements listed with police with the backing of BJP unleashed a reign of terror in Tripura and repeatedly the matter was brought to the notice of DGP and Chief Secretary but no action, he added.
