Agartala: Amidst discontent in the ruling BJP-IPFT front, the Tripura government has prepared for holding elections to urban local bodies in December, which was due in early this year but a poll could not be held apprehending the spike of Covid-19 second wave.

According to the report, with the indications from the state government, the election authority has directed all district administrations to prepare with the updated electoral roll, scrutiny of EVMs, infrastructure and other formalities. So, the state election commission can declare the poll schedule after the ensuing Durga puja for Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and 19 other civic bodies.

The BJP has also held the preparatory meeting with their state-level office bearers and Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has been holding meetings at Mandal level in all eight constituencies of AMC and re-organising the committees keeping eyes on upcoming elections.

However, two dissident BJP MLAs – Sudip Roybarman and Ashis Kumar Saha – who represented the most important constituencies of Agartala have been kept out from the election preparation.

The party sources claimed that the BJP President and three general secretaries had held election meetings at the party headquarters where both the MLAs were absent. Similarly, the recent party activities in the city and Chief Minister’s programmes Roybarman and Saha were allegedly not invited. Both the MLAs are known to be the leaders of a BJP dissident group who have been seeking the removal of Chief Minister Deb.

The party spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty denied the allegations of dissidence in BJP and said, “BJP will run with the opinion of all the leaders and workers and there is no point of excluding any MLA from the decision-making process. We are fighting unitedly against CPI-M and their newly found friend Trinamool Congress, as the people of Tripura don’t want them. Tripura wants the implementation of Modi’s development vision letter and spirit of what our government is doing.”

However, Roybarman and Saha declined to comment on it but said they are in BJP very much.

Meanwhile, government spokesperson Information minister Sushanta Choudhury said that the state government has sanctioned Rs 70 Cr for providing jobs to the urban poor under Tripura Urban Employment Programme (TUEP) scheme to disburse the money to them before Durga puja and to keep rolling the urban amenities including mega cleaning and sweeping.

The officials, however, indicated that sudden allocation in TUEP is a pre-poll bonanza for voters belonging to poorer sections in the urban areas. Besides, through party ground-level workers, the government has started house to house surveys for providing an adequate supply of water under the Jal Jeevan Mission, which had a target to provide water to every household by March 2022.
