Tripura man convicted on rape charge

After a long hearing and recording the statements of 13 witnesses, the court convicted him.

Agartala: A local court of South Tripura yesterday sentenced a middle-aged man identified Shiv Shankar Debnath to 10 years in jail compounding a fine of Rs 10,000 for raping a 30 years old woman in November 2018 at Kalshimukh area under Santirbazar.

The victim was returning home after selling clothes at Murasingpara in Patichhari during the Raas festival, the accused Debnath a driver hails from Rajapur Sachindra Garo Colony area of the district, raped her taking the advantage of her loneliness.

The report said that the victim, along with other passengers had boarded the vehicle of Shiv Shankar in the morning after the funfair when she was returning, all of her co-passengers got down at their destinations leaving the victim alone in the vehicle.

Taking advantage, Shiv Shankar, raped the woman at a secluded place near BSF camp and had fled away left her unconscious. Later, regaining sense she had gone home and reported the matter to the police.

Accordingly, police arrested the accused and brought her to trial.
After a long hearing and recording the statements of 13 witnesses, the court convicted him.
