Agartala: Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha claimed that the law-and-order situation in the state improved to a great extent when the entire opposition have been demonstrating against the increase of violence against women and the involvement of ruling party leaders in the gangrape and gun firing.

The opposition Congress, CPM, and TIPRA Motha protesting against the gangrape of a 16 -yrs old girl allegedly led by the son of Labour Minister Bhagaban Das last week in Kumarghat of Unokoti district followed by opening fire in the city by a BJP leader in Ushabazar of the city and gangrape of another tribal girl in Kalyanpur of Khowai on Wednesday by Deputy Chief of a Panchayat.

Dr Saha said, “Some unfortunate incidents keep on happening everywhere and here the police are taking action impartially. But it doesn’t mean that law and order break down in the state. The average rate of crime especially, the violence against women has reduced and police have been asked to be impartial and take appropriate actions against the anti-social elements.”

“I have asked police to keep zero tolerance against any crime, which is quite visible in the statistics,” he claimed to add that the law-and-order situation in the state in recent days has improved by leaps and bounds compared to the previous dispensation of communists, but the government wants to bring down to zero.

While talking to the media, information minister Sushanta Choudhury stated that during the CPM regime crime rate was very high and the conviction rate was very low because the police never registered any case until they got sanctioned by the party in power.

In most of the cases, police were compelled to submit a weak charge sheet but under BJP’s rule police have been set free to take action against the criminals.

During CPM regime, health minister Bimal Sinha was killed near his house in Kamalpur of Dhalai, MLA Madhusudan Saha was killed in his house, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Sadar Sukhram Debbarma was killed at his office chamber but none of the criminals were arrested despite inquiry.

Rape, murder, and violence were regular routines and there was no punishment because all the criminals took shelter in CPM parties, Choudhury alleged.

He claimed Bhagaban Das’s son was not in the station on the day when a girl was gang-raped in Kumarghat.

The name of the minister’s son was not in the FIR and the house where the incident happened was not in his possession. But the opposition parties try to malign the minister and BJP with baseless allegations, which people of the state will reply properly – the opposition will lose the seats to BJP.

Meanwhile, police on Wednesday detained a youth suspecting his involvement in a gang rape incident that took place in an area under Kalyanpur police station on Tuesday night.

The incident took place after a minor girl, who was returning to her house on Tuesday at around 11 PM went missing and she was allegedly looted by a group of miscreants on her way back.

The family members of the minor finally found their daughter in their house in a very distressing condition in the daw hours on Wednesday.

Soon after their daughter reached home, they lodged a complaint with the police station and alleged that their daughter was gang raped by four youths including the Deputy Chief of Dwarikapur panchayat Binod Bihari Datta.
