Agartala: Tripura observed International Mother Tongue Day with a series of events and colourful programmes.

The students, both Bengali and tribals, attended a procession, reasserting the beauty and importance of their respective language.

While the tribal community reiterated their demand for the inclusion of Kokborok (tribal dialect) in the 8th schedule of the Constitution during celebration of Mother Tongue Day, Bengalis remembered the sacrifice of the students who were martyred on Feb 21, 1952 in Dhaka demanding recognition for Bengali language in undivided Pakistan.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb attended a programme at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan whee he remembered the martyrs who sacrificed themselves to uphold the dignity of their mother tongue and urged the people to remain respectful to their mother tongues.

“Language is the expression of emotions, actions and feelings for an individual, which is also considered as a medium of communication with others. My government has given priority to the development of all the languages along with Bengali and Kokborok. I feel learning Hindi and English is equally important for all of us to build a better career,” Deb pointed out.
