Tripura: 3rd international internet gateway at Cox’s Bazaar via Agartala becomes functional

The BSNL officials said that the entire internet traffic of Tripura has now been diverted to Cox’s Bazar junction via Akhaura, which will ensure access to high-speed and high-quality internet services for Tripura as well as other northeastern states.

Agartala: The 10 Gbps capacity international bandwidth link between Agartala and Cox’s Bazar of Bangladesh has become operational from late Friday night after five years of the commissioning of 3rd international internet gateway at Agartala after Chennai and Mumbai, officials said here on Sunday.

The BSNL officials said that the entire internet traffic of Tripura has now been diverted to Cox’s Bazar junction via Akhaura, which will ensure access to high-speed and high-quality internet services for Tripura as well as other northeastern states.

“The establishment of high-speed stable internet connectivity would bring investment for the growth of IT industries in Tripura. The first SEZ at Sabroom is coming up with the infrastructure and special provisions for setting up of IT industries, which can cater the overseas investors as well as bring new entrepreneurs,” the IT officials said here.

They said a purchase order was placed on Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL) in 2015 for provisioning of a 10 Gbps internet gateway link to Cox’s Bazar on a lease basis for three years and added, “The 10 Gbps internet gateway was put through and traffic was loaded for testing and the technical observation, monitoring and testing were done in accordance with the criteria mentioned in the agreement between BSNL and BSCCL”.

The Ministry of Telecommunication had been prioritizing the project to strengthen telecom networks in Northeast and eastern India to bring investment in information technology. Moreover, the digital India initiative of the present government has also increased the pressure on existing international gateways at.

“Third internet gateway was essential for India to ensure connecting all the localities, services, amenities and individuals into the telecom network under digital India initiative. India and Bangladesh signed the agreement to boost a strong telecom network in Southeast and BSCCL has agreed to lease out its bandwidth for India,” the officials added.
