Imphal: A six-member delegation of Akhil Bhartiya Transport Association called on Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey and submitted a memorandum highlighting the day-to-day challenges and problems faced by the transporters.
The team mentioned that during this ongoing ethnic clash in Manipur, the transporters have braved as warriors and ambassadors of the great nation to reach out to the remotest corner to avail of all the commodities.
The delegation, however, informed the Governor about the insecure environment in the National Highways 2 and 37 wherein extortion in the form of illegal taxes is being collected by self-styled groups/ miscreants at various checkpoints.
They requested the Governor to look into the seriousness of the problem and the impending grim situation faced by the truck drivers, the transporters, as well as the general public of Manipur.
While giving a patient hearing to their concerns and grievances, the Governor said she had raised this issue during the recent meeting in Shillong with the Union Home Minister and sought intervention to stop all such illegal activities in the highways.
She said issues of extortion, looting, and illegal tax collection especially along the national highways have also been discussed with the Security Advisor, Chief Secretary and Chief Minister.
Measures to control all forms of disturbance were also informed by the Government, she said. The governor assured the delegation that she would raise the matter with the Central leaders and asked them to meet with the Security Advisor.
