Tokyo Olympics: Manipur CM announces Rs 1.2 cr prize money for gold medal winners

Five sportspersons from the State will participate in the Olympic Games which will be held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday announced that his government will reward sportspersons who bag medals in the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games.

CM Biren said that sportspersons who win a gold medal will be given Rs 1.2 crore as prize money,   while those winning silver medals will be given Rs 1 crore and Rs 76 lakhs will be given to bronze medal winners. 

Five sportspersons from the State will participate in the Olympic Games which will be held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan. They are Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu – Hockey, Shanglakpam Nilakanta Sharma – Hockey, Sushila Likmabam – Judo, Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom – Boxing and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu – Weight Lifting.   

Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu – Hockey

The Chief Minister made the announcement during the launching of Selfie Point to cheer Indian Olympic contingents in a solemn function held at Chief Minister’s Secretariat Monday. 

N. Biren Singh also said that the government would provide a cash incentive of Rs. 25 lakh to all the five participants who are representing the country in Tokyo Olympics. Expressing confidence that the State athletes would win medals for the country, he wished success to all the five athletes on behalf of the people of Manipur. 

Shanglakpam Nilakanta Sharma – Hockey File

A total of 102 Indian athletes across 14 sporting categories have so far qualified or been named in the final squad by their respective federations for the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics slated to begin on July 23.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu – Weight Lifting.

So far, the London Olympics in 2012 proved to be India’s best show at the showpiece event as the athletes won six medals.

Sushila Likmabam – Judo File

Minister for YAS Letpao Haokip, Minister for CAF&PD Th. Satyabrata, Chairman PDA T. Robindro Singh, MP (Rajya Sabha) Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba, MLA of Langthabal AC Karam Shyam and officials of YAS department were also present during the function.
