Imphal: The Manipur Government Monday filed an FIR against KNF-MC, a Kuki militant organisation, for allegedly renaming Thangjing Hill, a sacred as well as popular pilgrimage site of Meitei community, as Thangting Camp.
The move came after a viral photo showed the erection of a gate bearing the inscription “Kuki National Front-Military Council” with the location identified as “Thangting”, corresponding to Thangjing Ching.
Mangoljao Kamei, Under Secretary (Land Resources), Government of Manipur, in a letter addressed to Officer-in-Charge, Imphal Police Station, directed to register a Zero FIR against the organisation for renaming the Thangjing Hill to Thangting Hill as it violated the provision of the Manipur Names of Places Act, 2024 and section 4 of the Manipur Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1976.
The letter noted that the gate bearing the words – Kuki National Front-Military Council with the name of the site mentioned as “Thangting” indicates unauthorised changing of the original name of Thangjing (Thang Ching).
“…Thangjing (Thang Ching) is a hill of historical importance and the Art and Culture Department, Government of Manipur had declared it as a protected site under section 4 of the Manipur Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1976 vide Gazette No. 376 date 14/11/2022,” the letter added.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Biren Singh also addressed the issue, affirming his government’s commitment to taking action against any individual or group involved in such renaming activities.
“Under the Manipur Names of Places Act, 2024, a case has been registered to address the renaming of part of the Thangjing Hill range as “Thangting”, Biren Singh wrote in his X handle on Monday.
