Silchar: In a significant move toward empowering women through legal awareness, a special session on women-centric legislations and Provisions in Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) was conducted at the Sribar GP Office, Lakhipur Block. Organized as part of the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme, the event reaffirmed the government’s dedication to gender justice and women’s rights.
The awareness session was a joint initiative led by SANKALP: District Hub for Empowerment of Women, under the Department of Women & Child Development, Cachar, in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Cachar, and Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ASRLMS), Cachar. Members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Gender Point Persons actively participated, highlighting a collective effort to educate women about their legal rights and avenues for justice.
Salma Sultana, Secretary of DLSA, Cachar, spearheaded the discussion, elaborating on key legal provisions under BNS designed to protect women’s rights. She underscored the importance of legal literacy in ensuring justice and equality, emphasizing legislative measures that safeguard women from violence and discrimination.
Adding to the discourse, Rupali Akura, Centre Administrator of the One Stop Center, Cachar, highlighted the range of support services available under Mission Shakti, a government initiative aimed at assisting women in distress.
Key officials from Assam Rural Livelihoods Mission (ARLMS), including Sherlybom Rongpipi, Block Program Manager, and Mohan Deb, Block Coordinator of Lakhipur, also attended the session. Their presence reinforced the need for a collaborative approach to bridging the gap between legal knowledge and grassroots empowerment.
Throughout the program, speakers emphasized the vital role of legal awareness in empowering women. The session not only educated participants on the legal frameworks designed for their protection but also encouraged them to seek justice and utilize available support systems. With a strong focus on access to justice, gender equality, and community participation, the event marked another step toward building a more informed and empowered society for women.
