Shillong: St. Xavier’s College, Umoid, celebrated a landmark moment in its academic journey with the successful conduct of its First Convocation Ceremony, honouring the graduating class of 2026. The event was attended by the Hon’ble Minister of Education, Government of Meghalaya, Lahkmen Rymbui, along with the District School Education Officer (DSEO), Rev. Fr. Principal Dr. Sunny Augustine, SJ, EdD, faculty members, parents, students, and distinguished guests.
The programme commenced with a warm welcome address by Rev. Fr. Dr. Sunny Augustine, SJ, EdD, Principal of the College, who congratulated the graduating students on their achievements and encouraged them to pursue their aspirations with confidence, integrity, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Addressing the gathering, Hon’ble Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui congratulated the graduates on reaching a significant milestone and reflected on the importance of self-discovery, perseverance, and making meaningful contributions to society.
The Minister emphasized that no individual is perfect and that growth comes through learning from one another and continuously striving to improve ourselves. He encouraged the graduates to remain resilient in the face of challenges and not be discouraged when their dreams and aspirations take longer to achieve than expected.
“Life is full of opportunities and challenges. Every challenge that we overcome opens the door to new opportunities. Success is not defined by the absence of difficulties but by our determination to move forward despite them,” he stated.
Highlighting the various initiatives undertaken by the Government of Meghalaya, Rymbui noted that significant efforts are being made to create avenues for youth empowerment through entrepreneurship, skill development, training programmes, and educational reforms. He urged students to identify their passions, seize available opportunities, and remain committed to their chosen paths.
The Minister further advised graduates to avoid comparing themselves with others, reminding them that every individual is unique and blessed with distinct talents and abilities.
“Know yourself, understand your strengths, and appreciate the gifts that God has given you. Do not allow peer pressure to define your journey. Every person has a unique purpose and potential,” he remarked.
Speaking on the transformative role of education, he acknowledged the efforts of educational institutions, parents, and community leaders in shaping responsible and capable citizens. He appreciated the commitment of St. Xavier’s College in nurturing young minds and contributing to the advancement of higher education in the region.
In his concluding remarks, Rymbui encouraged the graduates to become compassionate, responsible, and productive members of society.
“Be a good human being. Be cheerful, be positive, and be an asset to society. Wherever life takes you, continue to shine brightly and make your family, community, and institution proud. I am confident that each one of you will become a star in your own field,” he said.
The convocation ceremony was further enlivened by vibrant cultural performances presented by the Class XII students, showcasing their creativity, talent, and enthusiasm. The performances added colour and celebration to the memorable occasion.
