Sports Ministry releases financial help of Rs 2.54 crore

The assistance is under the scheme of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons (PDUNWFS), which provides for the grant of suitable financial assistance to outstanding sportspersons now living in indigent condition, medical treatment, procurement of sports equipment, participation in national and international events etc.

New Delhi: Anurag Thakur, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, on Thursday said that financial assistance of Rs 2.54 crore (Rs 2,54,03,910) for athletes and coaches have been released.

The assistance is under the scheme of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons (PDUNWFS), which provides for the grant of suitable financial assistance to outstanding sportspersons now living in indigent condition, medical treatment, procurement of sports equipment, participation in national and international events etc.

“Assistance under this fund is demand-driven and financial assistance is provided to eligible players based on applications,” said Thakur in a written reply in Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

The Union Minister added that financial assistance has been provided to 78 athletes, former athletes and coaches, including sportspersons who have been facing financial difficulties due to the Covid-19 pandemic, for the period of April 2020 to January 2022.
