Gangtok: Opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) on Tuesday demanded enhanced security for former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling after his alleged harassment in Melli at the hands of ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha activists.

In a memorandum, the SDF – which ruled the state for 24 years till 2019 – said security for party president Chamling should be increased.

It also demanded “restoration of a peaceful atmosphere” in the state and arrest of all “anti-social elements” who abused Chamling and pelted stones at his motorcade in South Sikkim district’s Melli on January 8.

The memorandum was submitted to the state e Home Secretary and Director General of Police.

“If any adverse incident takes place, involving PK Chamling, the government will have to bear the responsibility,” said the memorandum.

The SKM has, however, rubbished the allegations, and filed a police complaint accusing Chamling of instigating attack on its party activists at Melli “without any reason”.
