Sikkim CM visits GLOF affected Lachung

The CM was welcomed by Minister for Roads & Bridges Samdup Lepcha, Minister for Rural Development Sonam Lama and Commandant 11 Battalion Ratan Singh Sonal and State Government officers.

Gangtok: Chief Minister P S Tamang on Sunday visited the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) affected Lachung, Lachen and Chungthang in North Sikkim which was devastated due to flash floods and Chungthang Dam burst.

‘I met with the families and individuals of severely affected by the recent calamity and provided essential relief assistance.

Also discussed with the concerned officials to assess the extent of damages, inquired about the ongoing rehabilitation process,’ Tamang said from the spot.

On reaching Chungthang by IAF Mi17 Helicopter, he walked to the site of damaged Dam, crossed the river on as temporary wooden bridge and saw clearing of debris and other repairs which are underway.

As the Lachen, Lachung and Chungthang are not accessible after the disaster, he travelled by Chopper earlier which is airlifting the victims.

The CM was welcomed by Minister for Roads & Bridges Samdup Lepcha, Minister for Rural Development Sonam Lama and Commandant 11 Battalion Ratan Singh Sonal and State Government officers.

He also interacted with Indo Tibetan Border Police, Border Roads Organization, General Reserve Engineer Force, National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force.

Tamang consoled those who had lost houses and assured all help to them in Chungthang.

The people is yet to recover from the shock of sudden destruction.
