Shah chairs high-level meeting to review Manipur security situation

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced plans to engage with both Meitei and Kuki communities to address and bridge the ethnic divide promptly.

New Delhi: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Monday chaired a high-level meeting in New Delhi to review the security situation in Manipur.

The meeting was attended by Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande, Union Home Secretary, Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Chief of Army Staff (Designate) Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi, Security Advisor to the Government of Manipur, Director General of Assam Rifles, Chief Secretary, Director General of Police (DGP) of Manipur, and senior officials from the Army and Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Amit Shah conducted a comprehensive review of Manipur’s security situation and emphasized the need to prevent any further incidents of violence. He highlighted the importance of strategically deploying central forces to restore peace and tranquility in the region, with the possibility of increasing troop numbers if necessary. Shah also stressed the need for strict legal action against perpetrators of violence.

The Union Home Minister affirmed the Government of India’s commitment, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, to ensure the safety and security of all citizens in Manipur. 

He also reviewed the conditions in relief camps, focusing on the adequate provision of food, water, medicines, and other essential amenities.

Shah directed Manipur’s Chief Secretary, Vineet Joshi, to ensure proper health and education services for displaced individuals and facilitate their rehabilitation.

Emphasizing a coordinated approach to resolving the ongoing ethnic conflict, Shah stated that the Ministry of Home Affairs would engage with both the Meitei and Kuki communities to bridge the ethnic divide as soon as possible. The Government of India continues to support the Manipur Government in bolstering the state’s security situation.
