Imphal: One day sale of handicraft Mora seats, candles, baskets etc. made by the inmates Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa, Khabeisoi was held on Thursday at the jail complex.
The hand-made products were inspected by N. Ashok Kumar, Commissioner, Home, along with other officials of the Central Jail.
Mention may be made that various vocational training programmes were organized for the inmates of the Central Jail, Sajiwa, with the objective to bring them to the public mainstream, for self-sustenance and to get self-employed, imparting skill development as well as to divert them from various personnel issues.
In this regard, the Superintendent of Central Jail, Sajiwa, SK. Bhadrika stated that the Jail Industry was started in the year 2014-15, since then, various vocational and skill development training have been given to many jail inmates.
It may be mentioned that hand-made products were even sold and showcased at the Sangai Festival in 2018. Section for carpentry is also in the pipeline. Due to a smaller number of convicted prisoners and under trial prisoners (UTPs), handicraft productivity is low comparatively with other States, he added.
Emphasizing the impact of such initiatives, the Superintendent affirmed that these programmes not only help inmates reintegrate into society upon release but also provide them with livelihood opportunities, enhance creativity, and encourage innovative thinking for a better future.
