Agartala: Tripura’s ruling BJP has lost the state Bar Association polls, with the Congress-CPI-M combine winning most of the seats. Along with both the key posts – President and Secretary – the BJP panel lost 10 slots in the 15-member body to the opposition combine by huge margins on Saurday.
The opposition panel under the banner of Save Constitution Forum defeated BJP backed Ainjeebi Unnayan Mancha, which won only one post of vice president, one assistant secretary and three panel members.
Upset with the results, BJP insiders held State Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath responsible for the debacle, alleging that he had empanelled “turncoats” as public prosecutors (PP) and assistant public prosecutors, depriving the “knowledgeable, competent and anti-left” lawyers across the state.
“This was a protest voting against the Government’s attitude towards the genuine aspirants. There was cross-voting against the BJP panel because the selection was done without considering the loyalty to the party,” observed a senior advocate, adding the present Government has aped the preceding Left Front regime by bringing an advocate general from outside. Moreover, the state government has been losing most cases due to incompetent PPs and APPs, he said.
