Rs 1.56 lakh collected from illicit liquor sellers on Gandhi Jayanti in Puducherry

A penalty of Rs 1.56 lakh have been collected from them and remitted in the treasury, the department said.

Puducherry: The Puducherry Excise Department has collected a Rs 1.56 lakh penalty from illicit liquor sellers here on Gandhi Jayanti Day, which is a dry day.

Upon receiving information about liquor being sold illegally, the Excise department had formed three flying squads to thwart the sale.
The flying squads registered cases against 18 people for illegally selling liquor in rural areas and seized 175.56 litres of liquor and 64.68 litres of arrack from them.

A penalty of Rs 1.56 lakh have been collected from them and remitted in the treasury, the department said.
