New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Monday paid rich tributes to legendary singer and Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, who passed away at a hospital in Mumbai in the wee hours on Sunday.
As the House assembled, RS Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu while mentioning the demise of the ‘Melody queen’, said, “In the passing away of Lata Mangeshkar, the country has lost a legendary singer. It marks an end of an era.”
Lata Mangeshkar, also known as ‘Melody queen’ recorded over 2,5000 songs in her career. Her singing throughout was diverse. She recorded songs in 36 Indian languages and in a few foreign languages two,” Naidu said.
The Chairman further said she was a ‘philanthropist’, who founded the ‘Lata Mangeshkar Medical Foundation’, which contributes to medical expenses of needy people. The House was adjourned for an hour as a mark of respect to the departed soul after the members observed silence.
