Chennai:  Terming disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from the post of LS MP as ‘fascist action’ and ‘an assault on progressive democratic forces’, DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin demanded its revocation.

In a statement here on Friday evening, Stalin condemned the  ‘fascist’ act of disqualification of India’s young leader Rahul Gandhi as Member of Parliament, in unequivocal terms and this showed that the BJP Leadership was scared of him.

He said this amounts to threatening and curtailing the fundamental  democratic right of a national party’s leader and an MP to express his opinion.

“All the political parties in India shall realise this and we should oppose unitedly”, he added. A criminal defamation case was filed in Surat District Court over an alleged remark made by Rahul Gandhi. He has been convicted for two years in the case, he said.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate who delivered the verdict has also suspended the sentence for 30 days allowing Mr Rahul Gandhi to go for an appeal in the higher court, Mr Stalin pointed out.

“To disqualify Mr Rahul Gandhi as an MP, before he could go for an appeal is nothing but snatching away the right of an elected Member of Parliament”, the DMK Chief said.

Stalin said only a trial court has given its verdict as of now. An appeal at the High Court is still on the cards. It is the Supreme Court that should pronounce the final verdict. It seems like the BJP was just waiting for this opportunity going by their act of disqualifying Rahul Gandhi within a day of the District Court’s verdict, he said.

“It is now clear how much the BJP is scared of Rahul Gandhi. The impact created by brother Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra is also a reason for BJP’s fear”, the Chief Minister said.

“Nobody from the Union Government has responded so far for any of Mr Rahul Gandhi’s accusations at the Parliament. They have disqualified him with the fear of Mr Rahul Gandhi entering into Parliament again will jeopardise their politics. By doing so, the BJP has lost all rights to even utter the term ‘democracy’, hesaid.

Observing that it was not fair for the Union Government to disqualify someone from the Parliament instead of trying to answer the valid questions raised by them, Mr Stalin said “I demand that the disqualification be revoked.”

“The disqualification of Rahul Gandhi was an onslaught on all the progressive democratic forces of our country”, he said and urged all the political parties in India should realise this and oppose it unitedly.
