Colombo: A group of protestors in Sri Lanka blocked the entrance of the main international airport to prevent the MPs from fleeing the island, media reports said here on Tuesday.
A group of youth from the Katunayake Free Trade Zone (FTZ) had blocked the entrance to the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), preventing parliamentarians from leaving the country, Daily Mirror quoted airport sources as saying.
The youth had blocked the entrance by parking vehicles across the road, reports said.
On Monday, Mahinda Rajapaksa had resigned from the post of Prime Minister, amid severe economic and financial crisis in the island.
The same evening, the ancestral home of President Gotabaya and Mahinda, situated in Medamulana of Hambantota, was set on fire by a group of protestors. Gotabaya is the real brother of Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The houses of several Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MPs’ houses and offices of several SLPP MPs had come under the attack from mobs and some were torched.
The DR Rajapaksa memorial in Madamulana, Hambanthota has been destroyed by protestors.
The unrest that erupted on Monday due to clashes between the ruling party supporters and anti-government protestors in the capital has left at least seven people killed and over 220 people injured thus far.
