New Delhi: Prof Bhagat Oinam has been elected as the new president of the Delhi Manipur Society here Sunday.
A general body meeting of the society, which is the only registered body for Manipuri people in Delhi, was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
The meeting also unanimously elected Wangkhem Anand Singh as its new general secretary and Lt. Col (Rtd) L Girija Devi as vice-president, a statement released by the society said.
W Bemcha and Mutum Yoiremba will be working as Treasurer and Assistant Secretary respectively, the statement said, adding that ten new executive members were also appointed during the meeting.
Elated upon his appointment as the new president of the society, Prof Bhagat, who teaches Philosophy at JNU, said that there are many economically weaker sections in our society, including the student community who are displaced because of the violence in Manipur.
Therefore, he said, this Manipuri Society should take a lead role in giving them proper support, rehabilitation and education for their livelihoods and future.
