Popy Hazarika finishes 7th in women’s in 59kg finals

Popy started her campaign with a successful lift of 81kg in her first snatch, but failed to lift 84kg in her second snatch attempt.

Birmingham: India’s weightlifter Popy Hazarika finished 7th with a total lift of 183kg in the women’s 59kg finals on Day 3 of 2022 Commonwealth Games here on Sunday.

Popy started her campaign with a successful lift of 81kg in her first snatch, but failed to lift 84kg in her second snatch attempt. 

She also failed to lift 86kg in her third snatch attempt with 81kg remaining the best in the snatch rounds.

In her clean and jerk attempt, Popy failed to lift 102kg in her first attempt, but successfully lifted the same in her second attempt, gaining a total of 183kg lift.

She failed to lift 107kg in her third clean and jerk attempt, thus bowing out from the medal’s contention.

Earlier in the day, Jeremy Lalrinnunga notched top honours in the men’s 67kg category, taking India’s tally to two gold medals at the Games. 

Yesterday, ace lifter Mirabai Chanu delivered India’s first gold medal, creating a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch event, by lifting 140 kg.

Bindyarani Devi also won India a medal, bagging a silver medal in the Women’s 55kg category.

The 22-year-old from Manipur lifted a total weight of 202kg with a fantastic attempt of 116kg in her final round in clean and jerk to pip England’s Fraer Morrow (198).

She finished just 1kg behind Nigeria’s Adijat Adenike Dlarindye, who clinched ended with acombined lift of 203kg, a Games record.
