New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders on Tuesday paid tributes to Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia on her 102nd birth anniversary.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “Tributes to Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia Ji on her Jayanti. Hers was a life totally dedicated to Jan Seva. She was bold and kind. If the BJP has emerged as a Party the people trust, it is because we had stalwarts like Rajmata Ji who worked among people and strengthened the Party.”
Vijay Raje Scindia was born on October 11 1919, in Madhya Pradesh.
She remained a Member of Parliament for several years between 1957 and 1998. She was actively engaged in different social activities especially in the field of women empowerment and worked closely with various organisations. She died on January 25, 2001.
Her daughters Vasundhara Raje and Yashodhara Raje are senior BJP leaders while her grandson Jyotiraditya Scindia is a Cabinet Minister in the Modi-led government.
While paying tributes to Scindia, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, her dedication towards BJP is commendable.
Taking to Twitter, he said, “Rajmata Scindia ji renounced the happiness and splendour of the palace and made the struggle path of public service the goal of her life for the upliftment of the nation.
“Even the brutal torture of the Emergency, which stifled democracy, did not deter her courage. Her dedication towards the organisation is commendable.”
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “I remember and bow to Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia ji, who is the epitome of gentleness, ease and simplicity and who is devoted with full strength and tact for the propagation of nationalist ideology in the country.
“Her contribution in the development journey of Jan Sangh and BJP is unforgettable.”
Union Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia said, “On the birth anniversary of my Ajiamma Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia ji, an icon of sacrifice and penance, bowed at her chhatri in Gwalior today.”
