Imphal: At least one person was killed and three others seriously injured in a police firing at Wangbal village in Thoubal district on Tuesday.
The incident took place at around 1 pm, when a group of youths approached an India Reserve Battalion camp, located at Wangbal, 26 km from here, allegedly seeking live bullets.
The personnel of the IRB camp reportedly refused to heed to their demand and an escalated tension and confrontation followed between the two sides.
During the tussle, personnel of the IRB blank-fired several rounds and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
In the ensuing scuffle, Amujam Ronaldo, 27, of Heirok Part – III, sustained bullet injuries. He was immediately shifted to Thoubal district hospital and later succumbed to bullet injuries.
The body is currently kept at RIMS mortuary, Imphal.
The reports said two more people were seriously injured and are undergoing treatment at Raj Medicity and RIMS.
As the violent protests spread across the district, three vehicles of Assam Rifles were burnt down by irate mobs in the Thoubal district. The house of an IRB personnel, who allegedly shot Ronaldo, was also burned down by a mob on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, angry women and protesters blocked the Asian Highway at several points and junctions, which passes through the Thoubal district.
