One AR jawan killed, six injured in Manipur’s Sajik Tampak

Imphal: At least one soldier of the Assam Rifles was killed and six others sustained injuries at Sajik Tampak under Chakpikarong police station of Manipur’s border district, Chandel on Wednesday morning.

One Assam Rifles jawan, identified as Hav Sangpi Baite, opened fire on his colleagues injuring six of them and later the individual shot himself, a statement of IGAR (South) said. All the injured personnel have been evacuated to a nearest military hospital for further treatment and are reported to be stable.

The statement also clarified that the incident had nothing to do with the ongoing ethnic strife in Manipur and said the central forces have a mixed class composition including those belonging to various communities from Manipur. 

“This unfortunate incident should not be correlated with ongoing conflict, given the fact that none of the injured are from Manipur,” the statement confided.

All personnel have been staying and operating together despite the polarization of society to maintain peace and stability in the state. Investigation into the incident has been ordered to ascertain the facts, it concluded.

Earlier report said that one jawan of the 15th Assam Rifles opened fire against his colleagues and fled to a nearby village. Later he was found dead by shooting himself with his service rifle. 

The report also mentioned that the deceased jawan snatched two AK Rifles along with 13 magazines after injuring his colleagues. 

Later, the five injured jawans were evacuated to Leimakhong military hospital and one at RIMS Hospital, Imphal.
