New Delhi: CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday expressed concern over media freedom in India on National Press Day, and said it was not just media but the democracy that is in danger.
“It is not just Media which is endangered when India stands at 142 out of 180 in the World Press Freedom Index. It’s democracy & much more,” Yechury said in a tweet.
The 2021 World Press Freedom Index produced by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), a French NGO, has again placed India at 142nd rank out of 180 countries.
National Press Day is observed on November 16 every year to acknowledge and honor the Press Council of India.
