Umiam: Describing the Northeastern states as the “heaven of India,” Union Agriculture Minister, Narendra Singh Tomar on Thursday stressed that there is a need to adapt to new technologies.Â
“If we speak of heaven in connection to agriculture, it is the North Eastern region of India leading the way, as it has its own unique agricultural products and practises along with varied diversities in each of the northeastern states,” Tomar said.
Addressing a three day Krishi Kumbh Mela at ICAR RC NEH, here in Meghalaya, the Union Minister said, “Institutions like ICAR have demonstrated potential in looking after the farmers, who are most valued to fulfil the hunger of the entire nation.”
Stating that India is now not only a food producing nation but also an exporter, Tomar stressed the quality of production while increasing production.
He also urged the farmers and agriculturists to value and preserve the rich biodiversity and resources of the region.
Emphasising that there is no dearth of water resources in North East India and that the water, when used efficiently, can be enhanced to produce “per drop more crop,” the Union Minister said, “it is time for the transition from climate sensitive agriculture to climate resilient agriculture and for practicing agriculture with an enhanced community approach rather than individualistic augmentation.”
The highlights of the fair include live demonstrations and the exhibition of recent technologies through the 102 number of stalls, by the host institute and its regional centers along with all the ICAR institutes in the region viz, NRC on Orchid, Mithun, Yak, CPCRI, NBPGR as well as different
Institutes and organisations like NESAC, the Central Agricultural University, the Assam Agricultural University, NABARD, the Coffee Board of India, NECBDC, and state departments of all eight states and others.
