Imphal: The representatives of the North America Manipuri Association (NAMA) handed over a cheque of Rs. 6 lakhs to the Governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey, to provide relief items for those affected in the ethnic clash and a memorandum was also submitted.
The cheque was handed over when the representatives of NAMA – Premjeet Sougrakpam and Hareena Sougrakpam along with Lt Gen (Retd.) Konsam Himalay called on the Governor at Raj Bhavan here on Monday.
Governor UIkey extended heartfelt gratitude to the team for their humanitarian initiative towards reaching out to the affected people at this critical juncture. Such a noble gesture of the Manipuri Diaspora shows their love and concern for the people of Manipur, the Governor said.
Uikey, while lauding their efforts, also urged all the people of Manipur to extend maximum assistance for the displaced families. She also informed that a separate Relief Bank Account was opened by the Governor’s Secretariat for providing assistance to the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and appealed to all to donate to the said account. The relief bank account number is 42104850437 and IFSC Code: SBIN0000092.
Governor Uikey also said that peace and normalcy can be restored in Manipur only through concerted efforts from all sections of the society. Incidents of violence have reduced considerably, complete peace restoration will happen when all affected people will return to their respective homes, the Governor asserted.
On the other hand, Benjamin Tao, Chairman, The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Senapati District Branch, Manipur along with his team called on Governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey and apprised her of the current situation of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) staying in different relief camps of hill district.
The team informed the Governor that the team visited different relief camps in Kangpokpi and Saikul areas to take stock of the ground situation and came across the problem of potable drinking water. They informed that they have handed over hygiene kits and essential items to the IDPs. They requested the Governor for providing well-equipped ambulances for IDPs requiring medical facilities and vehicles for the transportation of relief items for the IDPs.
Uikey lauded the efforts of the Senapati, IRCS Branch in reaching out to the Internally Displaced People in the hill district. She instructed the team to check the educational facilities for the IDPs children in the hill district.
Governor Uikey ardently appealed to the team to be a peace mediator while they extend their services to the affected people.
