Puducherry: DMK Puducherry Convener and Leader of the Opposition R Siva has alleged that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre is threatening the government in the Union Territory by ‘misusing’ its powers to do things in its favour.
According to a DMK release here on Monday, Siva, while addressing a public meeting here on Sunday night said the BJP which had lost deposits in the Assembly election held in 2016 won six seats of the nine seats it had contested in the 2021 Assembly election.
It was possible as six prominent persons were “purchased” as the party candidates, he alleged, further, the BJP government at the Centre appointed three party supporters as the nominated legislators of the Assembly, and grabbed the Rajya Sabha seat and Speaker post from the N R Congress.
Siva said, with an eye on the lone Puducherry Lok Sabha seat in the UT, Union Ministers are frequently visiting Puducherry, Home Minister Amit Shah visiting Puducherry once in six months and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited at the time of the Assembly election once and once after the election.
The party is preparing itself to contest the Puducherry Lok Sabha seat in the next election scheduled to be held in 2024, he said.
He said Prime Minister and Home Minster gave tall promises to develop Puducherry and Narendra Modi had stated to make Puducherry as BEST (Business, Education, Spirituality and Tourism) hub. But nothing happened and the present NR Congress-BJP government is closing down textile mills by issuing orders.
The claim of Union Minister of state for fisheries L Murugan that the Prime Minister had provided funds of Rs 3000 crore for Puducherry is false, Siva said the funds were less than the last year’s budget amount allocated.
Now the NR Congress-BJP government intends to present an Rs.11,000 crore budget this year, the DMK leader said and wondered how it will be possible when the state does not have any revenue.
The opposition leader said that a DMK government as in Tamil Nadu should be elected to power to protect Puducherry, bring in industrial units and generate employment opportunities for the youths.
He expressed a desire that the DMK should get the lone Lok Sabha seat from the Congress and romp home in the next election.
